Ravi Shastri has been appointed as the new Indian team coach till the 2019 World Cup as per media reports. The information came in after the BCCI Committee of Administrators recommended the Cricket Advisory Committee to speak with Virat Kohli and declare the identity of the coach at the earliest.
A source close to Ravi Shastri informed News18 that he is being congratulated by ‘his (Shastri’s) close friends in the BCCI’, however he is actually awaiting a formal word from the Board.
Reports emerged about the BCCI getting in touch with Shastri for the post of Indian team coach at the insistence of Virat Kohli on 22nd June. Sources in the BCCI had leaked that Shastri had decided to submit an application for the post of Indian team coach upon getting guarantee from the BCCI about acquiring the post.
Having interviewed 5 nominees on Monday, the Cricket Advisory Committee — consisting of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman — made it very clear that the name will be revealed after skipper Virat Kohli’s return from the Caribbean. But the SC-appointed Committee of Administrators stood ground and made sure that the declaration occurred on Tuesday itself.
“Till around 9 :30 in the evening, it was decided that the coach’s call would be made after the CAC meets with Kohli once he is back from America. But then things started rolling and the COA made it clear to the CAC that the announcement should be made today itself. Johri and BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary were briefed of the same,” the official stated.
Even though there can be different views on the issue and speculations keep on being widespread about how Shastri ended up with the job, it is believed that the committee did not want to rub skipper Kohli the wrong way since it is the skipper who is in touch with the coach 24×7.
“The CAC was indeed impressed by Ravi Shastri’s presentation and it was then decided that Kohli should be brought into the scene and the skipper should make the call because at the end of the day, it is the captain who will have to spend time with the coach and the equation cannot be compromised,” a BCCI official in the knowledge of advancements explained.
Shastri, who was the Team Director between 2014–2016, had lost to Anil Kumble for the same job a year ago.
However, position of coach was vacated after Anil Kumble resigned from the post after the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy and made a decision not to re-apply.
Ravi Shastri, in the course of his term with the team as director had guided India to the semi-finals of the 2015 ICC World Cup as well as the 2016 ICC WT20. It was Shastri, who was at the helm of affairs, when Team India, under Kohli’s command, blanked top ranked South Africa in a Test series played at home.
The bottom line from this incident is that having gotten his way now, Kohli needs win everything, otherwise the fans will be ready to grill him!
