A surprise came at Lords today when Sri Lanka managed to defeat Group B favourite India. The result leaves Group B in the balance, after four group games and with one game remaining for each team, the standings are level as all teams have two points. Providing we have no rain disruptions in the final two games, we will have two winner takes all games to end the group stages.
India batted well, without ever taking control in the game, although I am sure to start with they would have been happy enough setting Sri Lanka 322 to win. Both Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh disappointed, scoring 0 and 7 respectively, which didn’t help India today, but others did perform well. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma put on an opening partnership of 138 before Sharma fell but it was all in vein.
In reply, Sri Lanka were fantastic, with just opener Niroshan Dickwella failing to score, he was out for 7 early. After that blip the Sri Lankans were fantastic and fully deserved to win the game. It was a great batting performance from them, not just by an individual, but by the whole team.
Group B is going to be very exciting on Sunday and Monday when the final games take place. On Sunday India play South Africa and on Monday Sri Lanka face Pakistan. All teams are playing for a place in the semi finals so we should be in for two great games between four teams hungry for success in this tournament.
